Dr. Conway has shared the homeland of her maternal grandfather with countless travelers over the years.  This year will be extra special as we enjoy a medical tour of Cuba especially designed for the medical professional.   Enjoy a rich cultural, social and medical exchange with this small country so rich in culture, benevolence and heart.

We will travel to Havana and enjoy afrocuban music and history and of course some cuban salsa.  We will also delight in the regional foods and spectacular people. When we take a break from our medical expeditions, we will explore how the world famous cuban cigars are made and visit the rum museum.  No trip to Cuba will be complete without a quick detour to the Malecon.

Finally, we will spend the afternoon at Escuela Latinoamericano de Medicina (ELAM) where students from all over the world, including many american students, study medicine absolutely FREE OF CHARGE.  This is one of Cuba's humanitarian outreaches to help those who are from underserved areas train in medicine to become physicians and to prepare them to return to their home country and serve those same communities.  Our host will be Dr. Lourdes Tavares from the  University of Havana who is planning an exciting program for us!

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Who Can Join Us?    Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Allied Health Professionals as well as pre-professional students in the noted professions. Spouses and adult children are also welcome. Lay persons interested in a deeper understanding of the Cuban Health System are also welcome to attend.

Legal Travel: All travel is LEGAL and with approved licenses

Costs:  Our charges are the most affordable available for legal travel to Cuba. Tours that include only significantly less cost quite a bit more.  Please browse the websites of InsightCuba or other vendors for comparatives.  We are traveling with a trusted vendor who has navigated our travel needs for many years and we have never been disappointed. Your airfare IS NOT includedYour  Cuban Visa IS included in your costs.

Join Dr. Conway and I AM ABEL FOUNDATION as we navigate the Cuban Healthcare System with our Cuban Partners.  This is a completely customized excursion tailored to the medical professional and health pre-professional.  We will stay at one of the finest hotels in Modern Havana.  Most meals will be covered (2-3 daily) along with professional guided tours to each stop along our journey.  The Cubans have well understood how the social determinants of health affect and impact medical health.  This is an incredible opportunity to observe how this small, island country with truly limited resources is able to provide some of the finest healthcare in the world to it's citizens.   On our free night we plan to enjoy the Afro-cuban sounds of the Buena Vista Social Club.  Of course a stroll in the old classic cars is already on the itinerary!  This is the "Don't Miss" event of the year.

ToursAll tours are led by experienced Cuban tour guides with expertise and knowledge in Cuban History as well as the Cuban Health System.  For large groups, travel is in air-conditioned coach bus but no matter the group size, travel accommodations are spacious and comfortable.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are typically included but we have a few nights out on our own where we can try other exciting options.

Visa: Your Cuban Visa IS included in your costs. You will receive it by mail. Please do NOT complete it UNTIL you are on the leg of your flight that is flying out to Cuba.

Pre-departure Dinner:  Prior to each trip, we will have a pre-departure dinner at the home of Dr. Conway where you can sample some Cuban Cuisine and ask any remaining questions you may  have.  It's also a great time for everyone to get to meet their fellow travelers in advance!  Our last pre-departure shin ding was a huge hit so don't miss it!

Air Fare: If you are interested in group airfare please email us at globalhealthstudies@iamabel.org for more information.  If you will arrange your own airfare, please check with Dr. Conway prior to choosing flights to best coordinate with airport transfer to hotel with our Cuban partners.

DAY 7 OF I AM ABEL FOUNDATION'S CUBAN HEALTH SYSTEM TOUR!

DAY 7. It is definitely hard to say goodbye! This was an amazing experience that was made special because of the people that took this journey with us! (I'm not crying!! lol). We spent the morning visiting the senior citizens at Convento de Nuestra Senora de Belen. This repurposed convent is a humanitarian health project in Old Havana. The construction on the Convent was begun in 1712. It was expanded and remodeled several times over the centuries. Finally abandoned in 1925, it fell into grave disrepair. In 1991 restoration began and continues with amazing results. Today the Office of the Historian, local Public Health authorities and the Order of the Sisters of Charity jointly manage the Belén Convent. It is home to fifty elderly people and provides physiotherapy and ophthalmological services to many more elderly in the community. Other activities include exercise classes, board games, cognitive rehabilitation, films, crafts workshops, and "love among the elderly" lectures. We spent the afternoon at the Rum Museum where we learned about the history of rum production in the island and concluded with tasting for those interested at the Havana Club. There was even cocktail making. We spent an amazing lunch at La Carreta. Some of our travelers went to the market for shopping and the rest of us went to visit Finca La Vigía (House and farm of Ernest Hemingway Museum) which is one of my personal favorite parts of the tour. But a visit in Cuba would NOT be complete without a panoramic ride in old convertible cars. The mentees, physicians and all of our travelers were all styling and profiling and dressed to the 9s in our vintage cars. We arrived at Havana’s most famous private restaurant, La Guarida, where the 1997 Cuban blockbuster “Strawberry and Chocolate” was filmed. Dinner was divine as we all prepared to depart until next time.

(English) I’m going from Alto Cedro to Marcané Then from Cueto, I’m going to Mayarí. The love I have for you I cannot deny My mouth is watering I just can’t help myself. When Juanika and Chan Chan Sifted sand together on the beach How her bottom shook and Chan Chan was aroused! Clean the dry sugar cane leaves from the path So I can get to that trunk I want to sit down. I’m going from Alto Cedro to Marcané Then from Cueto, I’m going to Mayarí. #BuenaVistaSocialClub #ChanChan #Cuba
